New Delhi: After clinching the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, Indian cricket is set to embark on their next challenge under a new captain Shubman Gill as they will lock horns against Zimbabwe in a five-match T20I series commencing on Saturday. In the wake of the retirements of senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja along with other key players being rested, India will field a predominantly young team for the tour of Zimbabwe.
The series also marks the dream beginning for Abhishek Sharma, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande, who have made it to the senior Indian side on the back of their spectacular performances in the Indian Premier League in the last season. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who also had received a maiden India call-up was unfortunately ruled out of the series due to medical reasons. Shivam Dube has been named as a replacement.
With Rahul Dravid stepping down from his role as head coach of India, National Cricket Academy (NCA) head VVS Laxman has been sent to Zimbabwe to fill the void. The BCCI will announce Dravid’s replacement before the series against Sri Lanka. The Harare Sports Club in Harare will host all the matches between India and Zimbabwe.
