Friend’s lengthy voice notes are driving me insane

0

DEAR DEIDRE: My friend insists on sending me long voice notes instead of texting, and it’s driving me bonkers.

She can talk for England and I lose the will to live half-way through listening. How can I make her stop?

We’re both 19 and at college together.

I like to keep in touch with my friends by messaging, but she records messages that are at least ten minutes long. Nobody has the time for that!

I never respond to her monologues, and I’ve even lied, telling her my phone speaker is broken, but she still sends them.

When we meet up, we have nothing to talk about because she’s left all her news on my phone already.

I just want her to communicate in a normal way, like everyone else.
What can I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: Some people find typing on a phone tricky, so prefer to leave voice notes.

But your irritation is understandable.

She doesn’t seem to have taken the hint so you need to spell out.

Say you’d rather she sent simple texts and ask if there’s a reason why she can’t.

My support pack, Standing Up For Yourself, should help.
