According to local media, one person was hit in the face the fiery projectile, several others were injured by the pyrotechnic displays as crowds gathered to celebrate American independence.

At least two fireworks were launched into performers on the field, while two others hit a stand, landing among a row of spectators.

A crowd of around 50,000 was expected for the event.

The celebrations would put on pause for 20 minutes as people were rushed to local hospitals to treat their injuries. A total of six people were taken to hospital.

However, Provo Police Department spokesperson Janna-Lee Holland said the exact number and severity of injuries at the annual holiday event was not immediately available.

The Stadium of Fire is an annual event that takes place in LaVell Edwards Stadium at Brigham Young University. This year featured a performance by the Jonas Brothers.

According to local media reports, witnesses said there had been a small fire in the stand which was created by the wayward fireworks.

It was quickly extinguished.

The show got back on track around 9 pm local time.

Organisers America’s Freedom Festival said in a statement that safety was the “upmost importance” to them.

They said: ” All pyrotechnics at Stadium of Fire are thoroughly checked before the show, and were rechecked after tonight’s incident.”

“Our thoughts are with those were impacted, and we are following up with them to make sure they are okay.”

It comes after a chilling quadruple shark savagely mauled beachgoers in Texas on July 4.

The ocean predator struck four times in the resort town of South Padre Island, Texas, on Thursday, cops and the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The one-minute-long video shows the woman lying on the sand while the predator swims back and forth near the shoreline.

Rescuers rush to her aid, as they try and stem the bleeding from a wound on her leg.

Blood can be seen in the waves as the victim appears to be in shock following the attack.

A local police spokesperson said: “Details at this time indicate that two people were bitten and two people encountered the shark but were not seriously injured.

“The two victims who were bitten were transported to Valley Regional Medical Centre in Brownsville where one is being treated and the other has been flown out for further treatment.
