Greece arrests 7, including 3 Iranians and 2 Afghans, over Arson attacks on Israeli-owned hotel

Greek counter-terrorism police announced the arrest of seven suspects, including three Iranians and two Afghans, accused of setting fire to an Israeli-owned hotel and restaurant in central Athens earlier this year.

Among those detained were a 25-year-old Greek woman, Iranians aged 36 and 46, and their Afghan accomplice, all linked to the attack targeting a building housing Israeli establishments using an improvised incendiary device.

The suspects face charges of endangering lives through arson and causing damage to properties of foreign nationals under racial motivations.

In another incident, a 44-year-old Greek man and a 26-year-old Afghan approached a synagogue in Athens on June 29, throwing flammable materials and setting its entrance on fire, with a 30-year-old Iranian aiding them in the operation. All were arrested and charged with arson, theft, and possession of weapons.

Greek police have stated that out of the seven suspects detained in connection with the synagogue and Israeli-owned hotel attack, five remain in custody, while two others have been conditionally released pending their trial.

Earlier, during Operation 2023, Greek police thwarted an attack on an Israeli restaurant in Athens and detained two individuals in connection with the incident.

Previously, on February 16, Tel Aviv University and the Anti-Defamation League jointly reported a significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents worldwide.

The Wall Street Journal reported last December on the emergence of new “terrorist” threats, thwarting several “terrorist operations” and detaining several asylum seekers and extremist elements in Europe, linking these threats to the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups, as well as the Gaza conflict.

Meanwhile, the escalating tensions and violence between Israel and Gaza have not only resulted in devastating human casualties but also sparked heightened security concerns across Europe due to increased terrorist threats.

The geopolitical ramifications of these events underscore the complex and interconnected nature of conflicts in the Middle East and their global implications.
