UK’s Labour Party forecast landslide majority in election exit poll

The United Kingdom’s Labour Party has been forecast a landslide majority in Thursday’s general election by an exit poll released by polling company Ipsos on behalf of three of the country’s major television broadcasters.

They have been projected to win 410 seats out of a possible 650.

Should the exit poll hold true, the party will return to government for the first time since 2010, with the party’s leader Sir Keir Starmer set to become prime minister.

The Conservative Party, which has been in government for 14 years, is set to suffer a historic defeat, reduced from 365 seats at the last general election in 2019 to just 131 this time around.

The Liberal Democrats will be the third largest party in the British House of Commons for the first time since they entered into a coalition government with the Conservative Party in 2010, winning their highest total number of seats since 2005.

The counting of votes has now begun, with the first results expected around midnight UK time (2am Cyprus time), and the country’s 650 single-member constituencies set to announce their results through the early hours of Friday morning.

The UK uses a “first-past-the-post” voting system. Voters choose one candidate in each constituency, with whoever gets the most votes being elected as the representative for their constituency in the House of Commons.

Should one party have an outright majority of seats in the House of Commons, their leader will be invited by the country’s King, Charles III, to form a government.
