Gunfire near East Bay vineyard kills man; shooting of woman also probed
ANTIOCH — A man died and a woman was critically injured on Wednesday night following gunfire in the city, authorities said.
The shooting that killed the man happened near a vineyard, according to a statement from Antioch police Sgt. Kristian Palma. Police did not say whether they suspect the woman also was shot there.
Officers responded to the 1600 block of Vineyard Drive about 11:25 p.m. and found a man wounded more than once, Palma said. The officers worked to save the man, as did Contra Costa Fire Protection District paramedics. He died at the scene.
Authorities did not identify the 58-year-old on Thursday.
The homicide is the seventh one investigated by Antioch police this year.
As rescue crews tried to save the man, a 44-year-old woman showed up at Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch with at least one gunshot wound, Palma said. Medics immediately took her by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. Palma said she remained in critical condition there Thursday.
According to Palma, police believe the shootings were isolated incidents and that there was no other threat to the public. Crime scene investigators are probing the case.
