North Portland public pool remains closed amid heat wave

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Pier Pool in North Portland remains closed due to a “significant water line failure” that occurred on June 27 as record temperatures are forecast for the Portland area.

Portland Parks & Recreation determined that the 84-year-old pool has a broken pipe in its water-circulation system. The broken pipe drained the pool and prevents the water from heating, receiving chemical treatment and recirculating into the pool.

“A large portion of Pier Pool’s inner mechanical workings are original parts dating from as far back as 1940,” Portland Parks & Recreation stated on social media.

The City of Portland said it is working with contractors to assess the damages. The work is expected to include digging under the concrete pool deck, doing the plumbing work, and replacing the concrete surfacing.

All swim lessons and swim team practices scheduled at Pier Pool were moved to Peninsula Pool at 700 Rosa Parks Way. A complete list of Portland’s public pools and its swim schedules are available on the City of Portland website.

An excessive heat warning is in effect as daily high are expected to exceed 100 degrees on July 5, 6 and 7.
