Preview – Sligo Rovers vs Derry City
Sligo Rovers vs Derry City – Thursday 4th July 2024 – KO 7.45pm – Showgrounds, Sligo
SSE Airtricity Premier Division
It’s Thursday night football across the League of Ireland this week with City making the short trip over Barnesmore Gap to take on Sligo Rovers (KO 7.45 pm)
The Candystripes’ record at the Showgrounds hasn’t been particularly impressive in recent seasons, however manager Ruaidhri Higgins insisted the focus would only be on his side trying to record a fifth straight league win.
“We’ve got real momentum at the minute and we’re playing well. What’s happened in the last three or four games there is irrelevant to be honest. We’ve won four games on the bounce at present and our only focus is trying to make it five.”
‘There’s a break from league fixtures coming up as we turn our attention to European and FAI cup games so it would be a real boost to go into that programme on a positive note.
“Obviously it will be far from easy. Sligo have put in some big performances of late; most notably their win over Shamrock Rovers last weekend.
“They’ll be boosted too by the fact that they’ve been able to keep hold of Ed McGinty and Ollie Denham. They’ve got good players and we know to expect a tough game.
For their part, the visitors are expected to work off the same squad as that which posted an emphatic win over Drogheda United last weekend.
Colm Whelan, who came on as a late substitute in that gane after a lengthy injury is expected to be on the bench again while new signing Jacob Davenport could also be included.
Ahead of Thursday night’s match, Derry City will present a wreath in memory of Sligo Rovers’ stalwart Tommie Gorman, who passed away last week.
