As happens every year, Marshall Bowman recently represented Raith Rovers in the annual commemorative events held in Northern France, honoring the brave soldiers of McCrae’s Battalion who fought in the Battle of the Somme. Marshall attended ceremonies at Contalmaison and the Somme, reinforcing long-standing relationships and paying tribute to the fallen heroes.

The Club’s participation in these ceremonies highlights lasting relationships established over the years and our connection with McCrae’s Battalion Trust. The bonds with fellow football clubs and historical organisations remain strong, reflecting a collective dedication to honoring past sacrifices.

Among those attending the ceremonies were John Duncan from Dunfermline Athletic, as mentioned Marshall for Raith Rovers, Tom Wright from Hibernian FC, and Andrew Mackinlay, the CEO of Heart of Midlothian. These individuals came together to honor the soldiers of McCrae’s Battalion, showcasing a united front of Scottish football clubs in remembrance of their shared history.

The event on July 1st in Contalmaison is a poignant reminder of the bravery of the soldiers from the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Seven Raith Rovers players were among the volunteers in McCrae’s Battalion, with three being killed during the war, including Jimmy Scott, who died on the morning of July 1st. These players were posthumously admitted to the Hall of Fame in 2016 and 2017, marking one hundred years since their ultimate sacrifice.

Photos from the event highlight the wreath-laying ceremony and the Contalmaison Cairn, which bears the name of Raith Rovers on a prominent plaque. These images serve as a visual reminder of the Club’s dedication to honoring its history and our former players, who were so brave.

Our commitment to remembrance extends beyond the annual Somme ceremonies. The Club also participates in the Remembrance service at Haymarket every year, invited by Heart of Midlothian as part of broader commemorations. The iconic “RemembeR” away strip of 2014 was introduced to honor the volunteers who joined up in December 1914, further cementing the Club’s dedication to preserving the memory of those who served.

By continually participating in these events, Raith Rovers ensures that the legacy of its players and the broader historical connections with McCrae’s Battalion remain strong and respected.
