After decades of Emmy snubs, Dominic West poised to finally receive first nomination
“The Wire.” “The Hour.” “The Affair.” “The Crown.”
Dominic West has been a television mainstay for more than two decades now, but would you believe he has never received an Emmy nomination throughout his entire career? Luckily, that seems poised to finally change.
As of this writing, 14 out of Gold Derby’s 17 Experts from major media outlets are predicting that West’s Emmy curse will finally be broken with a Best Drama Actor nomination for Season 6 of “The Crown.” The English actor hopes to follow in the footsteps of Josh O’Connor, who won a lead acting Emmy in 2021 for his portrayal of Prince Charles on Netflix’s regal drama. West took over the role in Season 5 and continued playing the real-life royal until the series finale in December of 2023.
West was eligible for this same prize last year, but was snubbed in favor of Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong (“Succession”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Jeff Bridges (“The Old Man”) and Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”); Culkin won. This year, not a single one of those six nominees will be back because their shows either ended or took the year off. That scenario has created the perfect storm for West to finally break through.

Our Emmy pundits collectively think West will receive his first nomination for Best Drama Actor alongside the following five leading men: Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shōgun”), Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”), Donald Glover (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Cosmo Jarvis (“Shōgun”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”). Do you agree or disagree with those predictions? You still have time to make your Emmy picks before the noms are unveiled on July 17.
During the sixth and final season of “The Crown,” West depicted a grieving Prince Charles after the mother of his children, Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), was killed in an automobile crash. Later on, he struggled to connect with young Prince William (Ed McVey) and Prince Harry (Luther Ford), and then the series ended with the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams).
Even though West has been overloooked so far by the Television Academy, he has received nominations from other esteemed awards organizations, including the Golden Globes (for “The Hour,” “The Affair” and “The Crown”), Critics Choice (for “Chicago” and “The Hour”), BAFTA (for “Appropriate Adult,” “Burton and Taylor” and “The Crown”) and the Screen Actors Guild (for “Chicago” and “The Crown”). Emmy voters, what are you waiting for?
