Byron Donalds says Black vote for Trump 'could go as high as 25%' in November

Florida GOP Congressman Byron Donalds says Donald Trump is going to perform better with Black voters than any Republican has done in a presidential election in several generations, predicting it “could go as high as 25%.”

Speaking on Sage Steele’s podcast with Texas Republican Congressman Wesley Hunt that was recorded in Atlanta before last week’s presidential debate, the Naples representative said, “I probably have President Trump today at 16%-20% of the Black vote overall. Black men near 25%. It could go higher.”

Before their appearance in Atlanta, Donalds and Hunt previously took their “Congress, Cognac, and Cigars” tour to Philadelphia in an effort to attract Black voters to go with the GOP this fall, and have said they may bring it to Milwaukee during the Republican National Convention later this month.

Donalds told Steele that in combination with the work being done by the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee, state parties, and outside groups, “I think that think that there’s going to be much more of a concerted effort towards targeting Black voters from the Republican side of the aisle than has ever occurred in Republican politics since, shoot, probably before Lyndon Johnson? To be totally blunt about that. And so, I think what you’re going to see if that work is done right, it could go as high as 25%.”

A Pew Research Center survey released in May showed that Biden’s advantage with Black voters was down from four years ago. The poll reported that Biden would get 77% support from Black registered voters and Trump 18%. Nearly half (49%) said that they would replace both Biden and Trump with different candidates if they had the ability to decide.

A Washington Post-Ipsos poll conducted in April of 1,331 Black adults 18 and over showed that 42% of voters said that they would definitely vote for Biden, 4% would definitely vote for Trump, and 1% would support Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
