Sudden death of 17-old Chinese champion during competition
A 17-year-old Chinese badminton player collapsed on the court during the Asia Championships in Indonesia and tragically passed away due to a heart attack.
Foreign media reported through social media videos that Zhang Zhiyi, a member of China’s national badminton team, suddenly fell to the ground during the final group stage match on Sunday in Indonesia and lost his life moments after a brief moment of distress.
According to reports, Zhang was transported to the hospital within minutes by available ambulance services, but medical teams were unable to save the young man’s life.
The hospital in Indonesia has yet to determine the exact cause of death, and investigations are ongoing.
Born in 2007 and hailing from Jiaxing, Jiangxi Province in eastern China, Zhang was only 17 years old. He joined the national youth team in 2023 and achieved numerous titles, including individual and team championships in the 2023 and 2024 Youth Badminton Championships Group B.
The sudden and tragic loss of Zhang Zhiyi has deeply saddened the badminton community and sports fans worldwide.
