BBC Breakfast cancelled in major schedule shake up – but it’s not all bad news for one host

BBC Breakfast is to be pulled from schedules in a very rare move this week.

The BBC‘s morning offering is often aired every single day all-year round but the channel has pulled the plug on the programme THIS WEEK for a very unique reason.

On Friday, the BBC will not air the Breakfast programme as usual meaning that fans will miss out on the chance to wake up with Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt on Friday morning like usual.

The show has been cancelled as a result of the Beeb’s mammoth Election results coverage.

In a huge scheduling shake-up, BBC One will broadcast EIGHTEEN continuous hours of coverage relating to the results of this year’s General Election.

Rishi Sunak of the Conservatives will be going up against Keir Starmer of the Labour party in a bid to be crowned the country’s next Prime Minister.

With voting taking place on Thursday, coverage of the vote count will kick-off at 9:55pm and will air continuously until 4pm the following day on Friday afternoon.

It means that BBC Breakfast will be forced to come off-air in the unusual move.

However, it is not all bad news for fans of the show as one of the programmes hosts will be stepping up to the mark to front the morning coverage of the ballot count.

Monday-Wednesday host Jon Kay will be seen on-screen on Friday delivering updates as they come in alongside BBC News star Sophie Raworth.

Jon has been chosen from the Breakfast crop to be the special co-host despite not normally hosting on Fridays.

The star was absent from his BBC Breakfast duties today (Tuesday), likely to accommodate for his extra day working.

Instead, his co-star Sally Nugent was joined by regular stand-in face Ben Thompson.

Sophie is known as a star of the BBC having regularly hosted the News At Six and the News At Ten broadcasts.

She also formerly was a presenter on Breakfast itself when she joined the programme in 2000.

Sophie has previously worked on Election Night coverage making her the perfect co-host for Jon.

Who are the current presenters of BBC Breakfast?

The flagship BBC show has had dozens of presenters during its impressive 40 years on air but the current stars are:

Jon Kay – Since 2022

Sally Nugent – Since 2021

Charlie Stayt – Since 2006

Naga Munchetty – Since 2014

Carol Kirkwood – Since 1997
