New grocery tax elimination bill to take effect in August

0

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Starting August 29, shoppers may see changes to their grocery bill.

House Speaker Charles McCall was in favor of the bill and helped push it through.

House Bill 1955 eliminates the 4.5% grocery tax, which is the state's portion.

In the new bill, tax on drinks like soda, bottled water and juices will be removed. Alcohol, however, will still be taxed.

Senator Mark Pugh is another lawmaker supporting bill.

"You could be looking at anywhere between four and $700 of tax relief in a in a given tax year for an average family of four," Pugh said.

With the law being new, there's a chance changes will be made in the future.

Pugh also says, "We'll continue to do that over the next few years and and really make sure that we've provided the most tax relief to all Oklahomans."
