Democrats stick with Biden after poor debate performance

Following CNN’s presidential debate Thursday Democrats in Congress say they're sticking by President Joe Biden.

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) - Following CNN’s presidential debate Thursday Democrats in Congress say they're sticking by President Joe Biden.

However, Republicans say he's not up to the task of a second term.

Democratic lawmakers acknowledge this was not a good debate for the president but they're still behind him and say a second Trump presidency would be worse.

"He should stay in this race,” said Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.).

South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn said one bad debate doesn't define a presidency.

"Because he's done a great job of leading for the last three and a half years,” Clyburn said.

Democrats say the president is fit for a second term despite concerns raised by his performance Thursday.

"He's the only Democrat who can beat Donald Trump,” said Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.).

Delaware Senator Chris Coons said that Donald Trump should drop out.

"Yes, he spoke plainly, but what he said was lie after lie after lie,” said Coons.

Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance said the debate showed a clear contrast between the candidates.

"Clearly Donald Trump showed that he could represent our country well,” Vance said.

He says the world is watching.

"I'm not worried about their debate performances Shannon. I'm worried about what these guys look like on the world stage,” he added.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said voters are watching too.

How could the American people see what they saw and not be forewarned,” said Graham.

The next debate is scheduled for September 10.
