“Catholic” Democrat Bob Casey Launches Pro-Abortion Campaign Ad

0

Self-professed Catholic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-PA, has launched a TV ad against his election opponent that suggests that Casey’s once-pro-life stance has shifted more fully in favor of abortion.

The Associated Press reported on June 19 that Casey’s new ad claims that his opponent, Republican David McCormick, wants to “‘make abortion illegal even in cases of rape and incest’ — a characterization McCormick says is wrong.”

Though he has discussed his stance on abortion in the past, this is the first time that Casey has “wielded abortion rights as a weapon,” AP noted.

Despite previous claims to be a pro-life Democrat, Casey has voted against pro-life legislation, such as the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. At the time of publication, CatholicVote’s Catholic Accountability Project has given his voting record scorecard an “F” rating. As CatholicVote reported in March, Casey also expressed that he was in favor of earmarking $1 million for a grossly offensive and anti-Catholic LGBT group.

According to the AP, Casey also warned earlier this month during a meeting with a progressive women’s advocacy group that the abortion pill and contraception could be banned, even in states where abortion is legal, if a Republican is elected president and if Republicans retake the Senate.

“You could have blue-state impact whether it’s a blue-state ban that affects contraception or whether it’s a blue-state ban when it comes to abortion because of mifepristone,” Casey said, according to the AP.

Casey’s pro-abortion strategy attacking McCormick’s position is “quite a reframing for Casey,” the AP reported. In the past, the AP pointed out, Casey has supported legislation that would protect life after 20 weeks, among other legislation not usually supported by Democrats.

“But he also had emphasized reducing abortions through services that prevent unwanted pregnancies and help pregnant women and young mothers, a reason he has given for backing federal funding for Planned Parenthood,” the AP noted.

Casey was first elected as a senator for Pennsylvania in 2007. Casey’s late father, Bob Casey Sr., was a pro-life Democrat, former governor of Pennsylvania, and the pro-life respondent in the 1990s Supreme Court case Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

According to the National Catholic Register, Casey Sr. expressed staunch opposition to abortion in a 1987 speech, calling it “the ultimate violence.”
