Germany 2 Denmark 0: Hosts survive lightning, torrential rain and VAR to make it through Euro 2024’s most chaotic clash
GERMANY are through to the quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Denmark.
Goals, VAR controversy and a 25 minute delay due to a thunderstorm hitting Dortmund – the match was a Euros classic.
The chaos began inside the first few minutes when Nico Schlotterbeck put the hosts in front with a bullet header.
However, the goal was chalked off for a foul in the build-up by Joshua Kimmich.
Then with 36 minutes on the clock, lightening flashed and hailstones tumbled from the sky.
Referee Michael Oliver halted the game and the players rushed off the pitch.
The drama continued after they reappeared as Joachim Andersen scored – only for VAR to disallow the goal.
And the centre-back then completed his hero to zero moment as he was controversially judged to have handled the ball in the area.
Kai Havertz stepped up and converted the penalty.
Before Jamal Musiala made it 2-0.
