Eddie Murphy Slams David Spade Over 'Racist' Joke on 'Saturday Night Live' From 1995

Eddie Murphy is calling out David Spade over a joke from back in 1995.

If you didn’t know, Eddie, 63, starred as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1980 to 1984 while David, 59, appeared on the show from 1990 to 1996.

After Eddie left the show, he started starring in movies, and during an episode of SNL in 1995, David cracked a joke about Eddie‘s film Vampire in Brooklyn flopping at the box office.

Now nearly three decades later, Eddie is slamming David over the joke, which he says was “racist.”

“Most people that get off that show, they don’t go on and have these amazing careers. It was personal,” Eddie told the New York Times‘ The Interview podcast.

“It was like, ‘Yo, how could you do that?’ My career? Really? A joke about my career?” Eddie recalled thinking. “So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought — I felt it was racist.”

Eddie went on to say that he was the “biggest thing that ever came off that show” and also called out the SNL producers for allowing David to make the comment.

“The show would have been off the air if I didn’t go back on the show, and now you got somebody from the cast making a crack about my career? And I know that he can’t just say that,” Eddie said.

“A joke has to go through these channels. So the producers thought it was OK to say that,” he continued. “And all the people that have been on that show, you’ve never heard nobody make no joke about anybody’s career.”
