Special Olympics 2024 summer games kick off this weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – The 2024 Special Olympics Ohio event is underway this weekend.

The event aims to provide a lifetime of opportunities to athletes of all ages. The best of the best from all across Ohio are in Columbus to compete. Family and friends came along for the ride to cheer on their favorite athletes as well.

There are over 2,400 athletes between the ages of 8 and 81, competing throughout the weekend. Athletes train all year long for this moment. Over 1,200 volunteers work to make this event happen.

“I'm feeling pumped. I'm ready. I'm ready to come home and bring home that gold if I can,” said Sophie Coffenberry, an athlete.

Coffenberry has been competing in these games for years now. She looks forward to this weekend every year.

Organizers said not only does this work to improve the health and wellbeing of those competing, it also is an opportunity for the community to come out and show their support.

“For many of our athletes, this is it, right? This is the thing they look up to. It is like they're Disney World. It's something, obviously a sports competition, but I think it's so much more than that for our athletes,” said Jessica Stewart, CEO of Special Olympics Ohio.

Stewart said the impact this has on the athletes is everlasting.

“It makes me feel wonderful. I just get the heebie jeebies. I'm like, I'm ready to do this. Let's do this,” said Coffenberry.

Stewart said it’s all about inclusion and getting the athletes to a place where they can be showcased.

The Summer Games take place all weekend long. The opening ceremony is Friday at 7 p.m. in the Shoe.
