Push for federal social media bill

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)---Congress has a bill that aims to protect kids online.

Mary Rodee is a member of Parents SOS— a group that wants big tech to be responsible for keeping kids safe on social media. She supports the Kids Online Safety Act, a federal bill known as KOSA.

"KOSA is the basic online safety legislation to put in a pretty minimal amount of guardrails and accountability onto the big tech platforms," said Rodee.

The bill would require social media platforms to provide minors with options to protect their information and opt out of personalized algorithms. It would also mitigate certain harms such as sexual exploitation and allow parents to have more control.

The bill has bipartisan support and almost 70 co-sponsors. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is one of them, Last week he said that the bill passed through the Senate Commerce Committee unanimously.

"After weeks of work, we’ve made real progress in removing objections to this bill," said Schumer. "Sadly, objectors remain. I hope the progress can continue over the coming days."

In the House, a key step failed on Thursday before the bill could go to committee. It’s unclear when the legislation will move forward in both chambers.

At the state level, social media legislation called The SAFE for Kids Act was signed into law last week.
