Report: Former Spurs player is enthusiastic about the idea of a potential return
Tottenham academy product Marcus Edwards has been linked to a return to N17, five years after his departure, and he is very much open to the move.
Spurs are linked with a move to bring Marcus Edwards home
Timo Werner has already been officially signed for another loan season at Tottenham, but with the squad being deprived of ‘homegrown’ players whilst also needing some more firepower and dynamism on the wings, Marcus Edwards is an attractive option.
Alasdair Gold reported for Football.London a month ago that Tottenham were ‘monitoring the situation’ of their former winger, going on to confirm that the player himself ‘has made no secret of his desire to return to England at some point’ with Edwards ‘happy to return’ to the club that made him.
Edwards was swamped with what was likely an unfair amount of attention after former manager, Mauricio Pochettino, likened him to the great Lionel Messi when Edwards was just 17. The Argentine boss stated how ‘the play he plays’ reminds him of ‘the beginning of Messi’. (The Guardian)
Incredibly, Marcus only featured once in a Spurs shirt in the EFL Cup in a 15-minute cameo, although, it seems as though there’s now the potential to resume his Tottenham career. (TransferMarkt)
Crystal Palace are ‘keen’ on Edwards but he isn’t convinced
Portuguese media outlet, Record, revealed on Thursday (27/6/24) that although Crystal Palace are ‘keen’ on signing Edwards, an interest driven by new manager, Oliver Glasner, the player himself ‘isn’t particularly enticed’ by the South London side who achieved their best league finish last season.
Tottenham appear to be a significantly more attractive proposal for Marcus Edwards, with Record stating that the player, unlike for Crystal Palace, ‘would be enthusiastic’ about moving to the club.
Football.London in their report confirmed that Spurs have an extra financial incentive for a deal too as when Tottenham sold Edwards to Vitoria de Guimarães they included a 50% sell-on clause, choosing to then ‘transfer’ the clause ‘rather than cash’ when Edwards joined Sporting Lisbon.
The clause was negotiated down to 35% as part of the deal for Pedro Porro back in January of 2023, but the report claims the Portuguese giants value the English winger at £15 million, allowing Spurs to potentially acquire Edwards for £9.75 million.
Spurs Web Opinion
Marcus Edwards certainly ticks plenty of boxes in terms of being homegrown, as well as not too financially taxing.
Nine goal contributions in twenty-six league appearances for Sporting Lisbon is a decent return (TransferMarkt), however, the question will be is Edwards is transferable from a league which has historically been hit or miss with transfers to England.
Signing Edwards would offer depth to the squad and quality, as many Tottenham fans are aware of from the player’s impressive performances against Tottenham in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage, it will remain to be seen, though, how much further Marcus can develop.
