Voting to elect the successor of Ebrahim Raisi, the 14th President of the Islamic Republic, began across Iran at 8 AM on Friday, June 28th.

The snap presidential election held 40 days after Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter crash, features four remaining candidates after six qualified individuals, excluding two, withdrew from the race, including Masoud Pezeshkian, Mostafa Mirsalim, Saeed Jalili, and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, cast his ballot in the early minutes of voting in front of reporters, stating, “Election day is a day of joy and festivity for us Iranians.”

The Islamic Republic is deeply concerned about losing its legitimacy due to the boycott of these elections and the absence of voters.

Inside the country, from analysts and sociologists to political activists and cultural and artistic figures, the presidential elections have been boycotted.

Ali Khamenei also indirectly addressed this issue, stating, “I do not see any reason for doubt when you say some are hesitant.” He considered people’s election participation “a necessary and obligatory matter.”

Mohammad Khatami, former president from the reformist camp, cast his vote at Hosseiniyeh Jamaran, and Ali Larijani, former parliament speaker from the conservative camp, also voted in Mazandaran.

The Ministry of Interior has announced that 58,640 polling stations have been designated across Iran in this round.

According to official statistics released in domestic media, 61,452,321 eligible voters are registered inside and outside the country.
