Mets Fan Dressed as Grimace Chugs Beer During Rain Delay

0

On Wednesday evening, a Mets fan stormed Citi Field dressed as the team’s unofficial mascot, the “enormous [purple] taste bud” Grimace, and proceeded to chug beer during an interminable rain delay at the Subway Series. The debaucherous shenanigans kicked off at Citi Field after sheets of rain began pelting New York City, delaying the game by an hour in the fifth inning.

In footage shared with The New York Post, the Grimace impersonator is seen standing on a platform atop Shea Bridge and downing a Miller Lite while fellow fans cheered him on. After crushing the empty can, the purple bud raises his hands in victory as the crowd roars.

The McDonald’s character has unexpectedly become the Met’s good-luck charm since “the real Grimace” threw out the team’s first pitch earlier this month. Grimace’s pitch was nothing to write home about, but the effect it had on the team cannot be denied.

Before Grimace deigned to grace the Mets with his appearance, the team had won just eight of their previous 20 games. Since June 12, the Mets have won 13 of 15 games played. Fans quickly embraced the big purple taste bud for his heroic if unintentional efforts, as did the city of New York. On June 26, Grimace celebrated his birthday at the Empire State Building.

For many years, it was unclear exactly what Grimace was, short of an amorphous blob. But in 2021, McDonald’s manager Brian Bates revealed to the CBC that Grimace is in fact a taste bud. "He is an enormous taste bud, but a taste bud nonetheless," Bates said.

Though it remains to be seen if Grimace can keep the Mets’ winning streak alive, his presence seems guaranteed for the remainder of this season’s games.
