Napa fire chief to join Marin County department
By Edward Booth
Napa County’s fire chief will depart to join the Marin County Fire Department, the Napa County Board of Supervisors said this week.
Mike Marcucci — who has led the county’s fire department since 2022 — will leave the department Friday. He is set to become Marin County Fire division chief and director of the Marin Emergency Command Center on July 1.
Cal Fire runs the Napa County Fire Department. As unit chief of the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, he also served as fire chief for the county.
Marcucci’s contributions to the department have helped enhance fire safety in the county, according to a proclamation presented at the supervisors’ meeting on Tuesday.
“His strategic vision and proactive approach have significantly enhanced the preparedness and effectiveness of our fire department, making Napa County a safer place to live, work and play,” said board chair Joelle Gallagher, who read the proclamation.
Marcucci said in a speech to the supervisors that he believes the county fire department is in a much better place than it was in 2022. He said the move to the Marin County Fire will allow him to be closer to family.
“It is with mixed feelings that I retire, but an opportunity to go back home to family cannot be passed up,” Marcucci said.
Marin County fire Chief Jason Weber said he is pleased to welcome Marcucci, a third-generation firefighter with a family history in the Marin fire service dating back to the 1920s.
Marcucci is the grandson of Nello Marcucci, who served as fire chief of the San Anselmo Fire Department, and son of Marty Marcucci, who served as a battalion chief of the Ross Valley Fire Department.
His uncles, Bob Marcucci and Jim Coffey, served as fire chief and captain of the San Rafael Fire Department, respectively.
Mike Marcucci began his fire service career in 1990 working for both the Columbia College and Sonora City fire departments. In 1993, he worked at the Tomales fire station as a seasonal firefighter for the Marin County Fire Department.
During his career, Marcucci has served in several leadership and incident command roles, including an assignment with Cal Fire Incident Management Team 6, as deputy incident commander. He was also assigned as a Cal Fire liaison to the East Bay Incident Management Team for 10 years.
Marcucci is certified through the California State Fire Marshal as an executive chief fire officer and instructor and through the Center of Public Safety Excellence as a chief fire officer.
He earned a master’s degree in public administration from Anna Maria College, and a bachelor of arts degree from Brandman University, as well as associate of science degrees from Sierra College and Columbia College.
“Chief Marcucci brings extensive experience in command and control as well as statewide leadership,” Weber said. “We are very fortunate to have someone of his caliber joining us in this critical role.”
Contract terms were not immediately available Wednesday. The salary range for the role is $185,744 to $225,784.
