MAGA superfans stunned by Trump-loving candidate's primary loss: 'What's going on?'

Donald Trump's fans were flabbergasted by the losses Tuesday of some of his preferred candidates in Republican primary elections.

Trump-backed candidate Trent Staggs was soundly defeated in the GOP primary of U.S. Senate in Utah, where John Curtis won the nomination to run for Sen. Mitt Romney's seat in November's election — and conservative commentator Brigitte Gabriel and other MAGA supporters were stunned, reported Newsweek.

"What is going on in Utah?" Gabriel tweeted. "The Mitt Romney endorsed candidate who refuses to endorse President Trump just won their Senate primary."

A social media user who calls herself "AunT ULTRAMAGA PATRIOT" was similarly skeptical of the results.

"I'm very surprised," she said. "There is a lot of enthusiasm around Mayor Staggs in Utah. I've seen none for Curtis like zero."

Others accused Romney, who was the GOP nominee for president a dozen years ago, of being a secret Democrat, while others claimed Democrats had changed their party registration or even moved from California to vote for Curtis .

Staggs was among three Trump-backed candidates to lose GOP primaries Tuesday, which raises questions about the value of those endorsements, especially after losses in the midterm elections by his favored candidates Herschel Walker in Georgia and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania.

Romney was among seven Republican senators to vote for Trump's conviction following his impeachment over the Jan. 6 insurrection, but he is retiring from Congress after his term ends.
