‘The Bear’ is set for 4 supporting actor Emmy nominations: Just how rare is that?

0

As the reigning Best Comedy Supporting Actor Emmy champion, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) is naturally favored to retain that title after this year’s ceremony. Although he was the sole featured male nominated for his show’s first season, that very likely won’t be the case this time. Indeed, Gold Derby predicts that he will be challenged by three of his cast mates, which will make “The Bear” the third series to ever earn quadruple bids in this category.

The other supporting actors representing “The Bear” on the 2024 Emmy nominations ballot are Lionel Boyce, Matty Matheson, and Oliver Platt, the last of whom picked up a guest notice for the FX show last year but lost to Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”). Another 14 of their cast mates – including 2023 winners Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri – are entered in the remaining five comedy performance races.

The first recipient of four simultaneous bids in this category was “Modern Family,” which took up two-thirds of the available slots in both 2011 and 2012. These respective instances resulted in wins for Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet, who competed alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ed O’Neill both times. Burrell and Ferguson also formed nominee trios with Stonestreet in 2010 and O’Neill in 2013 and went head-to-head in 2014.

The “Modern Family” precedent has since been emulated by “Ted Lasso,” for which Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift were all nominated in 2021. Goldstein emerged victorious in that case and in the following year when his challengers included Mohammed and another of their cast mates, Toheeb Jimoh.

The only other comedy series that have merited three supporting male mentions at once are “Cheers” (1985 – Nicholas Colasanto, John Ratzenberger, and George Wendt; 1988 – Wendt, Kelsey Grammer, and Woody Harrelson) and “Barry” (2019 – Anthony Carrigan, Stephen Root, and Henry Winkler). Including Stonestreet’s 2010 victory with those previously mentioned, five of this category’s nine triple or quadruple bid cases have resulted in wins for one of the involved actors.

Since there are fewer than 161 entrants on the current comedy supporting actor ballot, there are only six available nomination slots for the first time since 2019. “The Bear” is one of two dozen shows with at least three submissions on this specific ballot, with some of the others being “Saturday Night Live,” “Abbott Elementary,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

As of now, Moss-Bachrach, Platt, Boyce, and Matheson respectively hold the first, third, fourth, and sixth place positions in our odds-based comedy supporting actor ranking. Filling out our predicted top six are Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary,” second) and Paul Rudd (“Only Murders in the Building,” fifth).
