Amsterdam Mohawks set a franchise record in blowout win over Boonville

The Amsterdam Mohawks' offense roared to life in a hurry Tuesday night against the Boonville Lumberjacks. After being no-hit for the first three innings, Amsterdam erupted for 19 runs on 14 hits over the next three frames, which included a franchise-record 15-run sixth inning. The Mohawks only needed seven innings to take down the Lumberjacks, 19-1.

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Amsterdam Mohawks' offense roared to life in a hurry Tuesday night against the Boonville Lumberjacks. After being no-hit for the first three innings, Amsterdam erupted for 19 runs on 14 hits over the next three frames, which included a franchise-record 15-run sixth inning. The Mohawks only needed seven innings to take down the Lumberjacks, 19-1.

The lopsided final score belies the fact that this was a tight-knit contest for the first three-and-half innings. Boonville actually struck first in the top of the third when Joshua Lopez scored on a wild pitch.

That lead wouldn't last long, though, as Zach Eldred, a Columbia High School grad, unloaded a three-run home run over the right-field fence to claim Amsterdam a 3-1 edge in the home half of the fourth.

The Mohawks tacked on one run in the fifth - a Michael O'Brien RBI single - before their sixth-inning onslaught. The 15 runs scored are the most in a single inning in franchise history. The previous was 12; set back in 2017.

Of the 16 Mohawks who saw an at-bat, 13 recorded at least one hit, and all 16 reached base safely.

Despite allowing his first earned run of the summer, Amsterdam starting pitcher Drew Nelson put together a stellar outing, surrendering that one run on just two hits, while striking out nine. He picked up the win, improving to 2-0.

It's a quick turnaround for Amsterdam (15-3), which is back in action at home Wednesday to take on the Saugerties Stallions (15-3-1) - arguably the top team in the PGCBL outside of the Mohawks. In four meetings this season, the two sides are 2-2. Amsterdam won the last matchup: an 8-7 thriller at Shuttleworth Park on June 20.

First pitch Wednesday is set for 6:35 p.m.
