The Mets (38-39) took the opening game of the Subway Series with a 9-7 triumph over the Yankees (52-29) on Tuesday evening at Citi Field.

The team from Queens notched 12 hits and four home runs off Yankees’ starter Gerrit Cole, marking the first time this season they’ve had four homers in a game. Despite a five-run eighth inning for the Yanks, the fightin’ Mets held on for the win.

The club stays red hot with the best record in MLB in June (14-6). The win brings the team just one game below .500 with a chance to even their record for the first time since early May tomorrow.

The Mets pummeled the Yankees ace in his second start of the season, scoring six runs through the first five innings.

Tyrone Taylor opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. In the second, Mark Vientos and Harrison Bader each hit a solo home run. The Mets extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth with Vientos hitting another solo homer and Brandon Nimmo adding a two-run shot.

Vientos’ second bomb of the evening marked his ninth of the year and fourth in his past five games. Nimmo’s home run was also his fifth in the past seven games.

David Peterson started for the Mets, delivering a solid performance in allowing just one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out eight. His only run allowed came on a Juan Soto solo home run in the fifth. Peterson was lifted for Dedniel Nunez in the fifth after recording just one out, who quickly induced an inning-ending double play.

The Mets padded their lead in the sixth, adding three more insurance runs. Jeff McNeil and Bader hit leadoff singles, McNeil scored on a fielder’s choice by Nimmo, J.D. Martinez hit an RBI double, and Pete Alonso drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, making it 9-1.

Nunez tossed a 1-2-3 sixth. In the seventh, a missed catch error by Nunez gave Anthony Volpe a base, and an RBI double from Aaron Judge, made it 9-2.

Despite scoring nine runs, the Mets ran into trouble in the eighth. Adam Ottavino allowed a leadoff single and a walk before being replaced by Danny Young, who surrendered an RBI single. After walking Juan Soto to load the bases, Young was replaced by Reed Garrett—tasked to get the last out of the inning with ducks on the pond. Garrett then gave up a grand slam to Aaron Judge, bringing the Yankees within two runs at 9-7.

Reed Garrett came back to the mound in the ninth to protect the two-run lead and tossed a 1-2-3 to hold it down for the win. Nunez earned his first win, adding two strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Mark Vientos earns Tuesday’s honor with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, with two home runs. He’s slashing .297/.349/.576/.925 this season.
