TIBURON

Caviar shop seeks
to open restaurant

The Caviar Co. on Main Street, which offers a tasting room and prepackaged goods, has applied for a permit to operate as a restaurant.

“Currently, the classification as a tasting room limits clientele to adults only and restricts service to families wishing to enjoy champagne and caviar tasting with younger members of their families,” Dina Tasini, the town’s community development director, wrote in a staff report.

The proposed business hours are noon to 9 p.m. daily.

The Planning Commission has scheduled a hearing on the application for its meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Town Hall.

SAN RAFAEL

Police accuse man
of attempted murder

San Rafael police arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a woman during a family argument on Tuesday.

A relative called the police at about 1 a.m. to report the alleged crime at an apartment on Fairfax Street in the Canal neighborhood. Sgt. Justin Graham said officers found the suspect on the street, where he refused to obey orders and indicated he was armed with a knife.

When officers approached, the suspect grabbed the front of his waistband. An officer shot him with a 40-millimeter, non-lethal sponge round, which caused him to drop to the ground, Graham said.

Walenton Deleon-Diaz, 26, of San Rafael was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon. His bail amount was set at $750,000.

The woman is expected to survive.

MUIR WOODS

Coroner’s staff closes
cold case from 1982

The Marin County coroner’s staff has identified a man whose remains were found at the Muir Woods National Monument in 1982.

The man was Sigvard Svensson of San Francisco, a Swedish immigrant who was born in 1908, Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding said Tuesday. Svensson’s skeletal remains were discovered near the Deer Park Fire Road, Fielding said.

In 2018, investigators entered the unsolved case into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, but generated no matches. Later, the state Department of Justice DNA lab submitted evidence to Othram Forensics, a company in Texas. The company developed a DNA profile that investigators used to identify Svensson collect through genealogy research into potential relatives, Fielding said.

Fielding said the case file makes no note of “nefarious or untoward circumstances” surrounding the death.

“The cause of death appeared to have been undetermined as the remains were skeletonized upon discovery,” he said.

NOVATO

Suspect arrested
in Hamilton blaze

Police arrested a suspect who allegedly started a fire in the Hamilton area. No injuries or structure damages were reported.

The fire was reported at about 8:45 p.m. Monday near the Safeway store on Nave Drive. Police found the fire burning east of the business and noticed a suspicious person exiting the area, Novato police Sgt. Alan Bates said. Officers detained the man and determined that he set the fire.

Aroni Ahsiu, 41, of Novato was booked into the Marin County Jail, where his bail was set at $3,000.
