San Rafael man suspected of murder attempt

The alleged stabbing happened at an apartment on Fairfax Street in the Canal neighborhood, police said.

San Rafael police arrested a man who allegedly stabbed a woman during a family argument on Tuesday.

A relative called the police at about 1 a.m. to report the alleged crime at an apartment on Fairfax Street in the Canal neighborhood. Sgt. Justin Graham said officers found the suspect on the street, where he refused to obey orders and indicated he was armed with a knife.

When officers approached, the suspect grabbed the front of his waistband. An officer shot him with a 40-millimeter, non-lethal sponge round, which caused him to drop to the ground, Graham said.

Walenton Deleon-Diaz, 26, of San Rafael was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon. His bail amount was set at $750,000.

The woman is expected to survive.
