Travis County leaders to consider moving forward with affordable childcare program

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The Travis County Commissioners Court is to consider action that could provide affordable childcare to thousands of local families at its meeting Tuesday morning.

In May, Travis County Judge Andy Brown and Precinct 1 Commissioner Jeff Travillion touted support for the proposal.

The program would cost $77 million per year, and the county is considering asking tax payers to pay for it through a tax rate election.

If commissioners approve moving forward with the tax rate election, it would go on the ballot Nov. 5.

If voters approve the program, it would cost the average household around $10 more per month. Back in May, Brown said the initiative would help thousands of local families.

“We’re going to help aid that over 8,000 families get assistance in some way of either childcare, after school assistance,” Brown said.
