Report: Italian club ready to end interest in player due to Tottenham’s transfer demands
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy is known to be a tough negotiator when it comes to transfer talks and it appears this could be the case once again.
Tottenham and Genoa are struggling to reach deal for Djed Spence
According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Genoa are now ready to call off their pursuit of Djed Spence since they are unwilling to meet Tottenham’s asking price for the player.
Spence had a relatively successful loan spell at Genoa during the second half of last season and was widely tipped to seal a permanent move.
Spence impressed while making 16 appearances in Serie A in the latter half of the campaign with Genoa finishing in eleventh place in the table (BBC).
In fact, GiveMeSport suggested last week that the two clubs were nearing an agreement and claimed that the transfer could be sealed quite swiftly.
The publication backed up what we had already heard, stating that the Italian club did not want to activate the £8.4m option to buy Spence permanently and were looking to knock a few million off the price.
The option to buy clause is only valid up until the end of June and with just a week left, time appears to be running out for a deal to be reached.
However, if Tavolieri’s latest update is to be believed, the negotiations are now expected to be called off since the two clubs have not been able to reach an agreement.
Genoa will not pay the £8.5m clause to sign Spence from Spurs
The journalist explained that Tottenham insisted that they want at least €7m (£6m) for the right back, which Alberto Gilardino’s side are not willing to pay.
Instead, he says Genoa are now expected to turn their attention to Napoli’s Alessandro Zanoli, who is available on loan with an option to buy for €6m (£5m).
Spurs Web Opinion
An asking price of £6m for Spence is certainly not excessive, given the attributes that the youngster possesses.
He could be a major asset in the right sort of system, which is why I would expect a few of the lower Premier League sides to explore a move for the right-back.
Spence had a horrible loan spell at Leeds at the start of last season but did get himself back in the shop window with a decent spell in Italy which may have changed the minds of some English clubs.
