India may put an end to Australia’s T20 World Cup Campaign

0

The match Australia plays against India in the T20 World Cup may be their last one of the tournament. This volatile situation resulted from Australia’s shocking defeat against Afghanistan on Sunday in St. Vincent. With their loss, both teams are currently competing for the two semifinal spots in Group 1 of the ‘Super 8s’ stage.

Group 1 of the ‘Super 8s’ stage, which includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, and India.

Australia had to defeat Afghanistan in order to make it to the semifinals with India, but Afghanistan’s historic victory implies that none of the Group 1 teams have officially qualified to the semifinals as of yet. But India is all but eliminated, and Australia and Afghanistan are currently competing for the second berth.

Bangladesh has dropped both of their matches and is all but eliminated from this year’s tournament.

The outcome of the two group matches that are still to be played, Afghanistan vs. Bangladesh (6 am IST on June 25) and India vs. Australia (8 pm IST on June 24), will decide which two teams qualify to the tournament’s final four.

The group 1 position as of right now

India: 2 matches- 2 wins | 4 points| NRR+2.425

Australia: 2 matches – 1 wins | 1 loss | 2 points| NRR+0.223

Afghanistan: 2 matches – 1 wins | 1 loss | 2 points| NRR-0.650

Bangladesh: 2 matches | 2 losses | 0 points| NRR-2.489

If India vs. Australia match will be washed out, Australia will receive three points in this scenario. The Australians would then like Bangladesh to defeat Afghanistan or a washout in the match between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, and India will advance as the winner of the group.

In the unlikely scenario that both matches are called off, Australia and Afghanistan will have three points each and advance to the semifinals as the second-placed team in Group 1 based on NRR.
