Report: Spurs defender’s move to Championship club collapses, but there’s a silver lining
Plenty of Spurs players are heading out of the exit door this summer, but one defender will be more likely to join a Premier League club rather than dropping down to the Championship, it seems.
Joe Rodon impressed at Leeds United last season
Tottenham are overseeing something of a defensive exodus already this summer, with Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga released from their contracts.
Djed Spence and Emerson Royal could also leave the club and head out to Italy, but it looks like Joe Rodon will not be sticking with Leeds United despite a successful loan deal with the club last season.
The Welshman flourished with the Yorkshire side in the Championship, but they are now very unlikely to keep hold of him, with Premier League clubs sniffing around according to Football Insider.
Joe Rodon set for Premier League switch
It is thought Leeds’ bid to make Rodon’s stay there permanent is “set to collapse,” with promoted sides Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton all interested.
Apparently, due to Leeds’ financial predicament, they are “unlikely to be able to meet Rodon’s valuation” from Spurs and will be outbid in the market.
Rodon made 50 appearances for Leeds last season (Transfermarkt) as they made it to the play-off final, where they were defeated by Southampton.
It is believed Leeds would have needed to gain promotion to have a chance of signing Rodon (Football Insider).
His contract was entering its final year at Spurs but the club took up an option to extend that by a year. However, Rodon is thought to be surplus to requirements at Tottenham (Football.London).
Spurs Web Opinion
I don’t know why Rodon would choose to stay at Leeds when Premier League clubs are looking at him.
He’s never had a fair crack at the top flight, and he more than deserves that opportunity now so it will be good to see him playing in the Premier League.
