Pakistan launches national anti-terrorism campaign amid rising security incidents

The government of Pakistan, led by Shehbaz Sharif, has launched an operational plan known as “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” and a national campaign against terrorism in response to increased security incidents and intensified attacks by armed groups against Pakistani security forces.

Pakistani media reports indicate that “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” and the national anti-terrorism campaign were initiated following a security review chaired by Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister, and senior cabinet members of the country.

According to a report by News X published on Saturday, June 22, the Prime Minister revitalized and renewed a national anti-terrorism campaign with the start of “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam”.

As per Pakistani media reports, these new measures by the government demonstrate their determination to combat and eradicate extremism and terrorism from Pakistan.

The objective of “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” is to consolidate and strengthen various fronts to fully and decisively combat threats stemming from extremism and terrorism.

This comes as security incidents in Pakistan have steadily and unprecedentedly increased since 2021, indicating that terrorist groups and paramilitaries have gained organizational capabilities to conduct extensive operations.

Over the past three years, the Pakistani government has faced significant challenges, with ensuring security and combating terrorism being among its foremost challenges despite considerable efforts.

“Operation Azm-e-Istehkam,” explicitly launched to combat terrorism, will be executed across various fronts with the collaboration of different agencies.

News X explained that, as part of implementing the Azm-e-Istehkam plan, efforts to limit the operational capabilities of terrorists through regional cooperation would intensify in the realms of politics and diplomacy.

All law enforcement agencies will strengthen and support enhanced military measures comprehensively. This support will be reinforced with robust laws to address legal loopholes that hinder the effective pursuit of terrorism cases and the enforcement of appropriate penalties.

The anti-terrorism campaign, primarily media-focused, will also be aligned with socio-economic measures to address public concerns in areas where terrorist groups are active.

The Pakistani government has described its new anti-terrorism plans as crucial and essential, stating that the survival and prosperity of the country depend on their success.
