Joan Lubamerksy, who served on the Larkspur City Council for 20 years, has joined the Independent Journal’s editorial board as its public member.

Lubamersky, 73, grew up in Corte Madera and has lived in Larkspur for more than 45 years. She is a staff member in San Francisco’s Office of the Administrator, where she has worked for five decades. Lubamersky was a district representative for former Assemblymember Marc Levine from 2012-2022.

The graduate of Redwood High School and University of San Francisco started her career in public service by working for a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. She worked three years for former Secretary of the Interior Cecil Anders as part of the Carter administration in Washington, D.C.

She returned to Marin in the early 1980s and joined the Larkspur Planning Commission, where she served three years before being elected to City Council. During her tenure on the council, she served as Larkspur mayor four times.

“One of my favorite parts was riding in a truck with all my family in the Larkspur Fourth of July parade,” she said.

After leaving the council, Lubamersky served on the Marin Planning Commission for five years. She volunteers on the USF Center for Public Service Advisory Board and is part of the group planning to bring back Larkspur’s beloved “Rose Bowl Dance” to benefit the city’s community foundation.

In 2022, Levine named her the Assembly District 10 Woman of the Year.

Lubamersky has two sons, Daniel and Michael Greendorfer. Her siblings include brother Mark Lubamersky, a Marin resident and former member of the San Rafael Planning Commission who has worked as a teacher, athletics administrator and coach.

Reserving a board position for a member of the public is a long-standing tradition at the IJ. Lubamersky joins IJ President and Publisher Rob Devincenzi, Managing Editor Jennifer Upshaw Swartz, Opinion Editor Dave Allen and editorial writer Brad Breithaupt. The board discusses local issues reported by the IJ and develops stands reflected in that week’s editorials.
