Athletic Club Bilbao president Jon Uriarte has said that rumoured Tottenham target Nico Williams is expected to stay at the club, insisting that the La Liga side see the youngster as being vital to helping them achieve their grand ambitions next season.

Nico Williams is attracting interest this summer

On the back of Williams’ stellar campaign for Athletic Club, it has been widely reported that Tottenham are plotting a move for the winger.

This includes an update from The Telegraph, who claimed back in April that the Spaniard, who has a release clause of €50m (£42.8m), is one of the top wingers on Spurs’ wishlist.

Tottenham are not thought to be the only club interested in the 21-year-old, with Football Transfers reporting two weeks ago that Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring his situation.

Meanwhile, journalist Gerard Romero had previously revealed on his Twitch channel that Barcelona are also after Williams and asserted that the winger had said ‘yes’ to moving to Camp Nou before the start of next season.

Athletic Club Bilbao do not want to sell Nico Williams

However, Uriarte has now rubbished those rumours, insisting that the pacy wide-man will remain at San Mames next season.

When asked about the speculation over Willams’ future, The Athletic Club president said (via Barca Blaugranes): “We are not here to talk about rumours. Nico is very happy in Bilbao and in Athletic and has commented on this many times. We are very happy with Nico.

“We are not paying much attention to those rumours that appear. We want to be fighting for the maximum, to reach the highest levels, to fight for titles and compete in Europe.”

By the sounds of it, Athletic Club have no interest in negotiating Williams’ sale and any interested club would have to meet the winger’s release clause if they wish to sign him.

Tottenham certainly have the means to meet that clause and there is no doubt that we need at least one more top-class addition at the top end of the pitch.
