The New York Mets bullpen has taken a hit. After losing a depth piece like Grant Hartwig to knee surgery on Friday, where he will be out 6-8 weeks, the team placed reliever Sean Reid-Foley on the injured list, per The Athletic’s Will Sammon. The Mets later announced that it was a shoulder impingement injury for Reid-Foley. In response, the Mets have recalled reliever Danny Young to take Reid-Foley’s spot in the bullpen. Young was previously sent back down to Triple-A after New York decided to keep Dedniel Núñez up when Edwin Díaz was coming off the injured list. 

Another IL Stint For Foley

This will be the second time this season that Reid-Foley has been on the injured list and both times have been due to a shoulder impingent. After struggling in his stints with the Mets from 2021-2023, Reid-Foley has become one of the standouts in a Mets bullpen that has seen its ups and downs in 2024. He pitched to a 1.66 ERA in 23 games with 25 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. He last pitched on Wednesday against the Texas Rangers, where his velocity was down.  

Danny Young Returns

While the Mets bullpen was shaky, Young and Núñez emerged and stepped up. The Mets made the tough decision to send Young down after Diaz returned, but now the 30-year-old southpaw is back in the bullpen for the time being. In 9 games, Young went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in 9.0 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts. He will rejoin Jake Diekman as the two left-handers in the Mets bullpen.
