06/22/2024: Humid & Stormy this Weekend
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:
A stationary boundary is draped over our region, and its proximity will once again support showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon hours Saturday. The boundary will lift to the north for Sunday, bringing another taste of heat and humidity. The air mass will be ripe to support strong to severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon & evening ahead of an approaching cold front.
Showers and t-storms are possible region-wide, but the more favorable environment for strong to severe storms exists along and south of the Mohawk Valley, south of the boundary. A Level 1/5 Marginal Risk has been placed south of I-90.
Look for a pretty big temperature divide north to south, with mid to upper 70s in the north country. A somewhat brighter day down to the south will support high temperatures closer to 90.
Any stronger storms taper in the evening, but a few garden-variety showers & downpours are possible overnight. It will continue to be muggy, with low temperatures in the 60s to near 70. That's actually cooler than most of our recent nights!
The boundary will lift to the north as a warm front by Sunday morning, and you'll notice a bit more heat & humidity. It should feel like it did on Friday across the News10 viewing area - hot & humid, but a step down from the peak of the heat last week.
An approaching cold front will be the trigger for strong to severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening in a very primed environment. Guidance suggests these storms will try to spin - so this is the News10 viewing area's first true tornado chance of the season. Other hazards include large hail, damaging wind gusts over 58 MPH, and torrential rainfall.
You'll want to be weather-aware Sunday afternoon and evening as these strong thunderstorms come through. Have a way to receive weather alerts - the News10 Storm Tracker Weather App is a good way to get those alerts!
Monday is the day we finally transition to a less humid air mass behind Sunday's storms. A shower or storm is likely, but temperatures should stay in the 70s this time around! Tuesday will be warm again - but dew points will be much lower. It should feel pretty comfortable for the final week of June.
Humidity creeps up a bit Wednesday and temperatures could push 90 - but behind a few showers and storms late Wednesday, we will get treated to two very nice days with low humidiy and a good dose of sunshine.
