She explained that her “Big Three” routine was the key to keeping her skin youthful.
First up is cleansing, and she recommends being “as gentle as possible.
“You can get a much milder cleanser if you rinse a lot with water after using it,” she said.
Next is a good hydrating moisturizer.
“There’s a certain amount of variation in what works with individual skin,” she explained.
“So try a few of the inexpensive ones named here and find something that feels good and makes your face feel hydrated and never tight.
“I have to add a facial oil in the winter, or I can never keep up, but that’s not the case for everyone.”
In the daytime, she finishes up her routine with some sunscreen.
“You need sunblock as well, but you can really improve things and thus help save some money by wearing hats with big opaque brims, high necklines, and long sleeves,” she said.
While the routine may seem obvious to some, she explained that she followed the three steps religiously.
“Doing a good and consistent job with those three with inexpensive brands is apparently 80 to 90% of the battle as long as you have a healthy diet and don’t smoke,” she said.
She added that an inexpensive $11 lotion also made a huge difference.
“I’ve been putting Curel Unscented body lotion on my face for 25 years and wearing hats when outside, and everyone says I look a whole lot younger than I am,” she said.
Helen noted that those with more leeway in their budgets can also add serums to target specialized issues.

“Serums can also be a great way to isolate what specific ingredients do the most for you,” she said.
“That’s how I found out my skin loves niacinamide and also ceramides.”
“The Curel Unscented Body Lotion has ceramides, so no wonder my skin has responded well to long-term use.
“It also contains a bit of petrolatum, and in the winter half of the year, I really need to use some petrolatum to get a sufficient moisture barrier.
“So, no wonder that one product seemed magic to me.”

“I started wearing the big hats many years ago because most chemical sunscreen irritated my skin, but it turns out my skin loves some zinc,” she said.
“So I use zinc-based sunblock, which is more expensive, but that brings us right back to the Big Three principle — dermatologists keep telling everyone that money on serums or expensive products is simply wasted if you don’t wear sunblock without fail.
“If you’re going to spend money anywhere, spend it on sun protection.”
