Angel City FC looks to maintain momentum at Bay FC

0

For the first time since early May, Angel City Football Club has an opportunity for a second consecutive win.

Angel City’s 3-2 victory over Racing Louisville FC on Wednesday snapped the club’s five-game winless streak.

Now, Angel City will travel to Northern California to face expansion club Bay FC, looking to exact a bit of revenge from the first meeting.

“Excited for the matchup,” Angel City coach Becki Tweed said. “We can’t hide from the fact that we lost to them in the opening game. It was a little bit of a weird one, but that’s football for you. I think we dominated in that first game. They’ve grown a lot since then in terms of their identity and they’ve changed a little bit of how they want to press, and where they want to win the ball back.”

Bay FC defeated Angel City, 1-0 in the March 17 season opener at BMO Stadium. The expansion team is the only team in league that was hasn’t recorded a draw (4-9-0, 12 points).

“We just have to be aware of those transitional pieces and make sure that we manage the game efficiently, making sure that we don’t cause our own downfalls, which is something that we’ve spoken about a lot,” Tweed said. “The focus will remain on us versus us. We are aware of them, their tendencies and their strengths. It’s going to come down to a performance from us.”

Angel City (4-6-3, 15 points) is on a final three-game run-in to the Olympic break. After Saturday’s game against Bay FC, Angel City will revert to a normal weekly schedule, with home games against Orlando on June 30 and Gotham FC on July 6.

“It started in Houston. Obviously, we didn’t get the result we wanted, but we did have a much better performance than we had been having,” Angel City defender Sarah Gorden said. “As far as off the ball, working together, being a group and playing for the full 90-plus minutes. So we kind of took that into (the) Louisville game (Wednesday).

“It was one of those games where we went in saying we are going to grind out a result no matter what. We had some really good stretches against Louisville and then we had some poor, which, at times has been the theme of our season, but the really good moments were better than they had been. We knew we were going to get those three points.”

Press on the road trip

Forward Christen Press, who is back in training, will be on the road trip to Northern California. Press is still on the season-ending injury list as she makes her way back from the ACL injury and the four surgeries that she’s had.

“Baby’s first away trip in two years!! Don’t panic fam. I’m not playing, I’m just hanging,” she said in an Instagram post.
