Schenectady building demolished after fire
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A fire broke out on Thursday afternoon on Parkwood Boulevard, severely damaging a residential building and prompting emergency aid efforts. Residents told us they believe the fire started with a second floor air conditioner, spreading rapidly to the attic.
Schenectady Fire Department Chief Don Marino reported, "On arrival, there was heavy fire up on the second floor, making its way into the attic." The nearby daycare nursery was quickly evacuated, with all children and staff safely relocated to another facility down the street.
Volunteers from the Northeastern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross provided emergency aid to 12 people in three households, including three adults and nine children aged 2 to 15. The Red Cross offered financial assistance, health services, comfort kits, and blankets.
Firefighters managed to rescue a family cat from the building. They faced challenging conditions inside the building and extreme heat outside. "They were inside for probably close to a half an hour in very challenging conditions," said Chief Marino. Crews were rotated in and out of an air-conditioned bus to stay hydrated and cool.
Today, demolition of the damaged building began. Residents affected by the fire are currently staying in a hotel, receiving ongoing support from the Red Cross.
Chief Marino emphasized the commitment of the firefighters, noting their dedication to ensuring everyone's safety despite the heat.
