Local theater group makes repairs after storm destroys set on opening night
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through Washington Park and the Park Playhouse Thursday. The stormy weather damaged the set of The Marvelous Wonderettes, causing the Park Playhouse’s opening night performance to be postponed until Friday.
The Park Playhouse crew worked frantically to repair the set for Friday. The left side of the front of the stage was torn down by the wind.
Dennis Strainge, the Production and Operations Manager for The Park Playhouse, said he and his crew were determined to get the set back together for Friday’s performance.
“We are pretty confident we’re going to be able to get everything done,” he said. “We are going to repair a few things and get everything back in place. Hopefully, with a fresh coat of paint and a little bit of scenic magic, nobody will know any different.”
The storm was just another obstacle they faced while working to get the show together despite the heat. But Strainge said all the work it took to put the set back together was worth it.
“It’s really important that we have a place to come and still laugh and enjoy ourselves,” he said. “I think that, that remains the most important part of what we do, the shows obviously are the most valuable thing in what we do,” he said.
The Park Playhouse operates solely on donations and stands as a free resource for those in the Capital Region.
