Mets Minors Recap: Jonah Tong Excels In Brooklyn

0

The results were varied across the Mets’ farm system on Thursday, as the organization’s three highest-level affiliates earned wins while each of their other four affiliates dropped their contests. High-A Brooklyn, who captured a victory over Jersey Shore, did so on the back of a stellar performance by Jonah Tong as he silenced the BlueClaw’s bats.

TRIPLE-A

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (36-34) 6, SYRACUSE METS (45-26) 8

BOX SCORE

An Acuña groundout plated the first run of the game for Syracuse in the third inning before home runs by Rhylan Thomas and Allen moved it in front by a score of 4-3 in the fifth. Rochester would later regain a 6-5 lead, though a two-run blast by Baty in the seventh ultimately represented the difference in this one.

  • RHP Dom Hamel (6.99 ERA)  5 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K (54 of 98 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Tyler Jay (2.18 ERA) 2 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 2 K
  • LHP Danny Young (1.35 ERA) 1 IP, 2 K

After a solid showing his last time out, Hamel had trouble piecing together a quality outing against Rochester as he allowed five earned runs or more in a single game for the fifth time this season. Matt Festa and Young held up their end of the bargain, however, as they combined to throw two perfect innings and close out the Red Wings.

DOUBLE-A

BINGHAMTON RUMBLE PONIES (34-30) 9, AKRON RUBBERDUCKS (35-31) 5

BOX SCORE

A Parada double, just his second extra-base hit of the month, and a Jaylen Palmer single provided Binghamton with a 4-0 lead right out of the gate in the first inning while homers by McLean, Jordan and Omar De Los Santos acted as further insurance for the club down the stretch.

Sproat allowed more than just a single earned run for only the second time this year and tied for the lowest single-game strikeout total of his professional career, but he still remained relatively effective and found a way to scrap through six innings despite not having his best stuff.

HIGH-A

JERSEY SHORE BLUECLAWS (38-28) 1, BROOKLYN CYCLONES (33-33) 2

BOX SCORE

Brooklyn recorded its only two runs of the night in the second inning on doubles by Tilien and Pregent while going 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and striking out 15 times as a team.

  • RHP Jonah Tong (3.68 ERA) 5 IP, H, 3 BB, 7 K (53 of 85 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jeffrey Colón (5.81 ERA) 2 1/3 IP, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Josh Hejka (1.47 ERA) 1 IP, H, K

Tong turned in one of his better performances since his promotion to Brooklyn, allowing just a single hit over five shutout frames. The Cyclones’ bullpen was just as stingy, ceding just one run on three hits and a walk across the final four innings of the contest.

LOW-A

MIGHTY MUSSELS (31-34) 6, ST. LUCIE METS (22-44) 5

BOX SCORE

St. Lucie scored four runs over the first three innings after a Ewing two-run homer and a Hernandez two-run single, though it was shutout from that point until the 10th inning as Fort Myers’ bullpen got the best of its offense.

A three-run third inning spoiled Wenninger’s start as he lasted just four innings while Ryan Ammons walked in two runs during the 10th.

FLORIDA COMPLEX LEAGUE

FCL METS (15-17) 1, FCL MARLINS (22-9) 11

BOX SCORE

The Mets’ bats couldn’t figure out the Marlins’ pitching staff, leading to a single run on six hits as they were shutout until the sixth inning.

The Mets’ defense did the pitching staff no favors, committing a whopping six errors on the day that caused six unearned runs to come across for the Marlins.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE

DSL MIAMI (10-3) 0, DSL METS ORANGE (6-6) 3

BOX SCORE

In a game defined by pitching, the Mets did just enough to earn a victory on Thursday, scratching across three runs over the first two innings.

Paulino’s third appearance of his professional career was his best as he shut out Miami over five innings while Harvey notched his second save of the season.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE

DSL METS BLUE (4-8) 1, DSL MARLINS (7-5) 3

BOX SCORE

Reyes’ tear through the Dominican Summer League continued with a home run as part of a two-hit day, though the rest of the team went just 3-for-23 with two walks.

Lugo and Ramirez both struggled with command but largely held the Marlins’ offense at bay, giving up just one earned run on three hits.
