Kingston teen sentenced for two separate shootings

A Kingston teen was sentenced in Ulster County Court to eight years in prison for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Tuesday.

KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Kingston teen was sentenced in Ulster County Court to eight years in prison for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon on Tuesday. Court officials said Sean Spurgeon, 18, previously pleaded guilty to the violent felony on Nov. 30, 2023.

Spurgeon's conviction stems from two separate incidents during the summer of 2022. Court officials said on July 19, 2022, Spurgeon shot at a vehicle, and the bullet ended up lodged inside a home on Furnace Street.

On Sept. 12, 2022, Spurgeon and others were at the Sunoco Gas Station on Broadway and chased two people down Franklin Street, firing shots at them. Spurgeon was 17 at the time of the shootings and was denied a youthful offender sentencing by the court.

District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji said time in prison is no life at all, but regardless of age, people who endanger the lives of others make a bargain for prison, and remorse doesn't change the harm that was done. "Sean Spurgeon's shots missed his targets, but they clearly pierced the conscience and any sense of safety and wellbeing of the people in those neighborhoods," Nneji said.
