PCB Will Undergo Major Changes Following T20 World Cup Setback

0

There are reports that the board is examining the three-year central contracts that former Chairman Zaka Ashraf gave the players.

This decision is being made since their experiment with not having a head selector did not turn out the way they had hoped, leading to terrible outcomes in both the months leading up to the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

What was shocking was the final outcome. The Men in Green, who advanced to the Super 8 stage in the previous competition in 2022, were not even able to repeat as winners. Their failure to advance to the next stage of the competition was a result of two devastating losses: one to the United States of America (USA) and another to India, their bitter rivals, from a position where they should have won. “The board is likely to return to the old system of having a chief selector with two or three selectors and the captain and head coach not sitting in selection meetings with the selectors,” a source told PTI. The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to go back to its previous selection committee system.

As a member of the selection committee that chose the side for the T20 World Cup, former Test fast bowler Wahab Riaz is certain to hold onto his significant role on the board and may even be named head selector.

Prior to the PCB opting for eight selectors over the previous three or four-member national selection committee with a top selector, Wahab served as the head selector as well.

With the implementation of the new system, former cricket players like as Muhammad Yousuf, Wahab, Asad Shafiq, Abdul Razzaq, and others were added as official selectors, in addition to the captain and head coach, Barry Azam and Gary Kirsten.

It seems that Wahab has a close relationship with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who has high regard for him and appointed him as an advisor in sports during Wahab’s interim tenure as Punjab’s chief minister prior to the elections.

The players’ three-year contracts, which were granted by former Chairman Zaka Ashraf, are another thing that the board is currently examining.

Because of their poor results, “players with central contracts will probably be demoted or even dropped, and other perks awarded to the players will be looked into,” he stated.
