Molly Woodward-Moor is an interior designer and creative director at Stone Superstore, a UK-based company specializing in home improvement supplies.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she revealed the secret to making homes look expensive.

EMBRACE ORIGINALITY

Woodward-Moor warned against embracing cheap or fad decor such as monotone colors.

“Decor items that are overly trendy can quickly go out of style, which can make your home look dated faster,” she said.

“Overusing a single material or color throughout your home can also make it feel monotonous and uninspired.

“Mixing materials and incorporating a balanced color palette adds depth and interest to your space.”

She said “all beige” is currently a popular interior trend but should be combined with accents of brass, rich wood, and vibrant greenery for a warm space.

“Faux plants can make a room look cheap if they are low quality as they can detract from the overall aesthetic of a room,” she said.

She said it’s best to opt for a mix of real and faux plants to create a “dynamic” ambiance.

Having the right plants is equally important outdoors.

“Many people forget that the exterior of your home sets the tone for what is inside,” she said.

“Neglecting the front yard, entryway, or exterior maintenance can make even a well-decorated interior feel less impressive.

“Simple improvements like maintaining the lawn, keeping paving stone clean, updating, or painting the front door, and adding some vibrant planting can hugely increase curb appeal.”

FABULOUS FLOORING

Woodward-Moor said making smart decor decisions and investing in cost-effective materials is the best way to make a home look expensive on a budget.

She said “From lighting to flooring, every detail counts” for a luxurious feel.

“A key element in achieving an expensive aesthetic on a budget is one of the largest surface areas in your home – the flooring,” she said.

“While hardwood and marble floors may be out of budget for many, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) offer a cost-effective alternative without compromising on style or quality.

“LVT flooring mimics the look and feel of natural materials such as wood, concrete, or marble, but at a fraction of the cost.

“With advancements in technology, modern LVT options are incredibly realistic, featuring intricate details and textures that closely resemble their natural counterparts.

“Opt for styles that emulate high-end materials like walnut, oak, or marble.

Vintage items can add character and charm to your home.

“Choose planks with realistic wood grain patterns, rich colors, and subtle variations to create an authentic look that replicates the warmth and elegance of hardwood flooring.”

She said LVT flooring is water-resistant, scratch-proof, and stain-resistant, unlike hardwood.

This makes it the best option for “high-traffic areas and spaces prone to spills or humidity.”

ANTIQUE ACCESSORIES

Woodward-Moor said “quality over quantity” should be the focus when adding furniture and accessories.

“Build up a collection of timeless pieces over time, with clean lines and classic silhouettes that add a sense of sophistication,” she said.

“Look for affordable options at antique stores, online marketplaces, charity shops, and consider upcycling existing pieces to give them a fresh, enhanced look.”

She said old furniture can be “transformed” with a fresh coat of paint or new upholstery.

“Vintage items can add character and charm to your home,” she said.

“If you have a keen eye, you can find unique pieces that enhance your living space without draining your wallet.”

She added that setting the mood of your home can be “instantly” done with the right lighting.

“To keep your interior spaces feeling high-end, use smaller sources of gentle, warm light and different heights through table lamps, floor lamps, and candles to build a ‘layered’ look that feels highly considered,” she said.
