I’m an interior designer & there’s 5 things that cheapen the look of your home – a certain type of artwork is so tacky
AN INTERIOR designer has revealed five things that make your home look cheap.
Reynard Lowell said a certain type of artwork is so tacky and revealed that you are probably hanging your curtains wrong.
Taking to his YouTube channel, the designer explained: “There are so many decisions that have to be made when designing a home.
“So it’s not surprising that we often face a few hiccups along the way.”
Generic Artwork
Reynard said artwork with quotes on them like “live, laugh love” are so “tacky” as they are generic and don’t resonate with anyone.
He admitted he has been guilty in the past of owning artwork like this, but has since learned from his mistakes.
He said: “Try to make your own art, display your photographs or buy something unique or custom made from Etsy. “
Furniture That Is Too Small
The designer said decorating rooms with rugs, coffee tables and artworks really cheapens the look of a room and makes it feel empty.
He said: “People usually decorate with small rugs because they are scared to commit to large ones, mainly because they are expensive”.
Reynard commented on large rugs and how they can ground the seating area and make the room feel more cohesive.
Hanging Curtains Wrong
The designer said curtain rods are often hung too low as a way to compensate for curtains that are too short.
He said: “This is a mistake as you want to hang curtain rods high to create the illusion of high ceilings and large windows”.
Reynard added curtains that are too short look “awkward and jarring”.
Having Everything Out On Display
Reynard said everything that is on display in your home should be carefully curated, otherwise the space will just look cluttered.
He explained that open shelving is often used by people to store “unattractive” items such as TV remotes, which cheapen the look of your space.
The interiors expert said these items should be hidden in closed shelves to keep the space looking “simple and clean”.
Reynard added only essential appliances like the toaster and kettle should be on display in the kitchen, to prevent the space from looking cluttered.
Matching Furniture
The designer revealed furniture that all matches looks cheap and tacky.
He said it’s better to use different shades of the same colour to create some contrast.
“The rule of thumb is to compliment furniture, rather than match it,” he explained.
It comes after another interior designer shared the Amazon buy that “gives a room a face-lift”.
Whilst one homeowner was quoted £17.6k for a garden makeover, but decided to tackle it themselves.
