MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Corinth man was arrested on Wednesday and is accused of selling counterfeit cellphones on multiple occasions. Andrew Mclaughlin, 21, faces multiple charges.

On May 26, around 10:23 a.m., troopers were contacted by someone from Saratoga County claiming they'd fallen victim to a Facebook Marketplace scam. Following an investigation, state police say the victim responded to a Facebook Marketplace post for a "Samsung" cell phone.

Police identified Mclaughlin as the seller. Police say Mclaughlin agreed to meet the victim in Malta, where he sold the victim a counterfeit cell phone. Police say the phone was later found to be inoperable.

Amid the investigation, state police say an additional victim was identified, whom Mclaughlin sold another inoperable counterfeit cell phone in Wilton via Facebook Marketplace.

Charges:

  • Third-degree trademark counterfeiting (two counts)
  • Second-degree scheme to defraud
  • Petit larceny (two counts)

Mclaughlin was arrested in Corinth and was taken to Saratoga State Police for processing. He was issued an appearance ticket to return to court on later dates.
