According to the professionals at Universal Drugstore, certain beauty products tend to interact negatively with the sun.

While perfumes and aftershave often contain an ingredient that can cause phototoxicity when exposed to sunlight, your skincare may be the most prominent problem.

Most people tend to apply their moisturizers to their faces and bodies, meaning most of their skin will be extra sensitive to the sun.

The experts highlighted that the anti-aging ingredients in your products are the reason behind the sun sensitivity.

“Retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and other exfoliants can be significantly affected by sun exposure,” they explained.

“These ingredients can increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, making it more prone to sunburn and irritation.”

They broke down the science behind how the ingredients interact with the sun’s rays.

“Moreover, exposure to UV radiation can degrade the effectiveness of active ingredients like retinol and AHAs/BHAs over time, reducing their anti-aging benefits,” the skincare pros said.

However, that doesn’t mean you have to throw out your entire skincare routine.

The experts revealed the best course of action to counteract the effects.

“To protect skin and maintain the potency of these products, it’s essential to use them as directed, usually in the evening, and to apply sunscreen with a high SPF daily,” they explained.

“This helps mitigate potential adverse reactions and ensures that these powerful ingredients continue to deliver their intended skin-renewing benefits effectively.”

Jamie Winn PharmD, Medical Director at Universal Drug Store, emphasized the importance of sun safety.

“Start by choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, ensuring it guards against both UVA and UVB rays,” he advised.

“Apply sunscreen generously and frequently, at least every two hours or more often if swimming or sweating.

    • Keep your skin hydrated internally by drinking water and externally with moisturizer.
    • Always use sunscreen, even if you’re not in direct sunlight.
    • Use Vitamin C to brighten the skin and don’t forget to apply to your neck.

“Additionally, seek shade during peak sun hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV radiation is strongest.”

He also recommended wearing protective clothing and being mindful of reflective surfaces “which can intensify UV exposure.”

“Lastly, stay hydrated and consider the cumulative effects of sun exposure over time, taking proactive steps to minimize risk and maintain healthy skin,” he said.

By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can enjoy outdoor activities safely while safeguarding your skin from sun-related damage.”

Other factors which can affect your skin’s reaction to the sun include medications, antibiotics, food, and drink.
